Site History
From this site Northwood Hygiene Products operated a materials manufacturing company, employing up to 100 workers. The site closed in October 2020.
Following discussions with Welcome Furniture, the site was leased by Adra, with the intention of creating a training centre for the demonstration and installation of products that would be part of the process of decarbonising homes owned by Adra.
The site also includes a Huws Gray which provides Adra and its contractors with equipment for repairing and refurbishing existing housing stock and constructing new homes.
The name
The name Gwyrddfai plays on the words Gwyrdd and Gwyrfai.
Green is a significant symbol for the environment and conveys what Adra and partners hope to achieve through decarbonisation. A house is at the heart of everything Adra does as a company and housing provider. Gwyrfai is a river and a rural district in Arfon and by now there is also a local path named ‘Lôn Gwyrfai’ for everyone to cycle or walk and enjoy the views.
A short list of names was presented to the pupils of Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, Penygroes, by Adra staff.
Long Term Objectives
In the long term, the development will result in a more qualified and skilled workforce, which will support the local construction sector and ensure that any value generated through decarbonisation and associated capital investment is retained locally.
It will also contribute to reducing carbon emissions in our homes, which in turn will reduce the impact of rising fuel and energy costs by making our homes more energy-efficient and improving the quality of life for our tenants.
There is real excitement among the partners and in the region about this project and the social value and positive difference it can achieve for local communities and the local economy.
